Mårdal Station, Bergen Light Rail, 2013
Outdoor Mural, approximately sixty meters in length and 7 meters at its highest point.
The work focuses on three main elements: – A map of Bergen with the light rail routes marked. The routes form a red thread that weaves through the composition.
– Travel posters from the 1940s and 1950s promoting Norway or the Western region. These posters have a distinct aesthetic, appearing more as propaganda than advertisements. They depict a stereotypical and one-dimensional view of Norway, which I have played with, deconstructed, and reassembled. Also included in the piece are iconic images from our collective memory, such as polar explorer Roald Amundsen with the Norwegian flag.
– “Nystemten,” translated via Google Translate from Norwegian, through English to Arabic. The words rendered in Norwegian are those that Google could not translate. These words are central and strongly tied to the song, so that one would recognize it as “Nystemten.”
The work was completed in April 2013, with great help from Linda Soh Trengereid and Gro Lygre Pettersen.
