TWEENS
Bekkevoll Secondary School, Molde, 2009
The Tweens artwork consists of a mural on the school’s elevator shaft. It spans three floors, with nine external panels of the elevator shaft being artistically worked. Visually, these are dense paintings that closely resemble photography and painted drawings. The motifs for the artwork are based on visual material from the youth themselves. It is a mix of personal snapshots and images found on the internet. I have searched for raw material with a universal character, meaning easily recognizable motifs and those that have become iconified through popular culture. From a rich image database, I have assembled different tableaux where the motifs don’t necessarily relate to one another. Nevertheless, the combination of motifs forms various stories where the viewer’s own preferences create the framework for the narrative.
