Woven Stories, Ålgård Town Centre

Five interactions with the existing architecture in Ålgård town centre:**
A new sign above the entrance to *Veveriet*, a mural on the façade of *Veveriet*, and a painting on the asphalt in the courtyard—now transformed into a basketball court. In addition, three works along the river trail: one piece on the inside of the footbridge, and two pieces on the retaining wall along the river.

The public art project in Ålgård town centre is an artistic exploration of industrial history.
The project includes five installations stretching from the old weaving mill along the river trail to the newly built Liv Godin Bridge.

All the motifs in the public art installations are drawn from textiles and photo archives from Den Forenede Ullvarefabrikk (DFU) in Ålgård, a cornerstone industry in the town’s history.
A key element of the project is a large asphalt painting on a street basketball court, where the patterns are taken from DFU’s textile archive. The painting serves both as an artwork and a functional sports court.

Another part of the project features enlarged portraits of female workers on the façade of the old weaving mill, along with a sign displaying fragments of patterns from the factory’s textiles.
An iconic photograph of the Ålgård football team—who played in the top division and wore jerseys made from DFU fabric remnants—is also included in the installation. The background of this piece is based on a wool fabric produced by DFU.
Another motif portrays factory workers against a backdrop of window awnings, also produced at DFU.
The works were created with assistance from Mattias Thronsen and Oda Tungodden.
